How to prepare for the nbn speed upgrade

This guide will walk you through exactly what’s changed, what you need to know, and how to prepare your setup.

If you have an FTTP or HFC connection and you were on a 100 Mbps plan or faster, your internet almost certainly got a lot quicker in September 2025 — whether or not you noticed at the time.

That's the part most coverage focused on. The more useful question, nearly a year on, is whether you're actually receiving those speeds. For a lot of households the answer is no, and the reason usually sits inside the home rather than out at the street.

This guide walks through how to check what you're on, what's likely to be holding you back, and what's coming next for anyone still connected over copper.

TL;DR

  • The nbn® speed upgrade took effect on 14 September 2025. Eligible FTTP and HFC customers were moved to faster tiers automatically, at no extra cost.

  • Being on a faster plan and receiving faster speeds are two different things. Your router, your devices and your Wi-Fi are now more likely to be the bottleneck than your connection.

  • On FTTP, Family Max nbn (500/50) costs the same each month as Family nbn (100/20) — so if you're eligible and still on 100, you're paying the same for a fifth of the speed.

  • FTTN and FTTC premises can still upgrade to full fibre. With Flip to Fibre™ the installation fee is waived on plans of 100/40 Mbps and above.

  • Copper connections are being retired. From July 2027, some premises will be notified that they need to move to fibre, with the first disconnections possible from January 2028.

What changed in September 2025

On 14 September 2025, nbn® lifted the wholesale speeds on its most popular high-speed products. Superloop passed those increases straight through, so eligible customers moved up without paying more or signing anything new.

The residential uplifts were:

  • 100/20 Mbps → 500/50 Mbps (now Family Max nbn)

  • 250/25 Mbps → 750/50 Mbps (now Megaspeed nbn)

  • 1000/50 Mbps → 1000/100 Mbps (now Lightspeed nbn)

Business plans moved too, with 100/40 Mbps lifting to 250/100 Mbps.

A new top tier arrived days later on 19 September 2025: Hyperspeed nbn, at 2000/200 Mbps on FTTP and 2000/100 Mbps on HFC.

Are you actually getting your upgraded speed?

This is the bit worth five minutes of your time.

  • Step one: confirm which tier you're on. Log in to Superhub or check your most recent invoice. Your plan name and speed tier are both listed there. If you were uplifted, the change should be reflected in your plan name, not just your speeds.

  • Step two: run a wired test. Plug a laptop directly into your modem-router with an Ethernet cable, turn Wi-Fi off on that device, and run a speed test. This tells you what's arriving at your home.

  • Step three: run the same test over Wi-Fi, standing in the room where you normally use the internet.

The gap between those two numbers is the single most useful diagnostic you can get. A wired result close to your plan's typical evening speed means the connection is doing its job, and anything missing is being lost inside the house — your router, your Wi-Fi, or the device you're testing on. A wired result well below the plan is a different conversation, and one worth raising with us.

Compare against the right number: Every plan has a typical evening speed: the download and upload results our existing customers actually get between 7pm and 11pm, when the network is busiest. That's the figure to measure yourself against, not the headline speed tier — which represents the maximum possible during off-peak periods. On Family Max nbn, for instance, the typical evening speed is 500/40 Mbps, while on Lightspeed nbn it's 860/85 Mbps. Both are in the table below.

One line in that table is worth a second look. Family nbn 100/20 (TES: 95/17Mbps) and Family Max nbn 500/50Mbps (TES: 500/40Mbps) carry the same minimum monthly charge. If your address is eligible for nbn fibre upgrade and you are still sitting on a 100 Mbps plan, you're paying the same money for a fifth of the download speed. You should get nbn fibre upgrade and get faster internet plan.

Which connection types can get the fastest speeds?

If you're on FTTP or HFC

You're in the best position. Family Max, Creator, Lightspeed and Hyperspeed nbn are all available on FTTP, and on HFC in supported locations — worth checking your address, as not every HFC line qualifies.

For plans up to 1 Gbps, your existing equipment is fine: most current nbn connection boxes handle speeds up to 1 Gbps without any change.

Hyperspeed nbn (2 Gbps) is the exception, because most existing connection boxes can't carry it. nbn upgrades the box at no cost, and how that happens depends on your technology:

  • FTTP — an nbn technician visits your premises to install the new box.

  • HFC — you receive a self-install kit and set it up yourself.

You don't wait around in the meantime. We'll start you on a temporary 500 Mbps or 1 Gbps plan so you get faster speeds straight away, then your service switches to the full 2 Gbps automatically within four hours of the installation being confirmed. If you're on FTTN or FTTC

Copper-based connections — Fibre to the Node and Fibre to the Curb — are capped at 100 Mbps, so none of the faster tiers are available to you as things stand. Most of these premises can be upgraded to full fibre, and there are two separate things worth understanding here, because they're often conflated.

What nbn requires

nbn runs the upgrade programme itself, and it has been relaxing eligibility. Since 1 July 2026, FTTC premises no longer need to order a high-speed plan to qualify for a fibre upgrade under nbn's own rules — around 600,000 homes became newly eligible on that date. FTTN premises generally still do.

Is the FTTP upgrade worth it?

Beyond the speed numbers, the case for full fibre comes down to three things.

  • Everyone can use the connection at once: Video calls, game downloads, 4K streaming and a dozen background devices stop competing with each other. This is the change most households actually notice — not the peak speed, but the absence of negotiation over who's using the internet.

  • Access to higher nbn speed tiers: On copper you're limited to 100 Mbps, full stop. On fibre, Family Max, Megaspeed, Lightspeed and Hyperspeed all open up, and you can move between them once a month at no cost as your needs change.

  • Stable foundation for smart homes: Cameras, sensors, doorbells and voice assistants are individually undemanding but collectively constant. The router and hardware you need for high-speed nbn

Here's the part that catches people out. A faster plan doesn't help if the equipment in your house can't carry it. Plenty of households were uplifted to Family Max nbn in September 2025 and saw very little change, because their router was the limiting factor all along. Your choice of modem-router is listed in our Key Facts Sheet as one of the main things that affects the speed you actually get, alongside where you put it and how far your devices are from it.

Your modem-router

  • WAN port speed: This is the port your nbn connection box plugs into, and it's the most common hard ceiling. A gigabit WAN port is sufficient for plans up to Megaspeed nbn (750/50). For Lightspeed nbn (1000/100) you'll want 2.5 Gbps to reach the full speed rather than stopping just under the gigabit mark. For Hyperspeed nbn (2 Gbps) a 2.5 Gbps port is essential — a gigabit port will hard-limit you to less than half your plan speed.

  • Wi-Fi standard: Wi-Fi 6, 6E or 7 will get the most out of a high-speed plan, particularly with a lot of devices connected. Wi-Fi 5 hardware still works and can still deliver several hundred megabits per second in good conditions — it just won't keep up with the top tiers, and the gap widens as your plan gets faster.

  • Mesh coverage: In a larger home or one with difficult internal walls, a single router is often the real problem rather than the plan. A mesh system spreads coverage rather than boosting the peak.

For reference, the eero 7 available on eligible Superloop plans supports wired speeds up to 2.5 Gbps and wireless up to 1.8 Gbps, with two auto-sensing 2.5 GbE ports — enough headroom for every residential tier including Hyperspeed.

Your cabling

For wired connections, Cat 5e carries a full gigabit and handles 2.5 Gbps over typical household runs without issue. If you're cabling from scratch or running longer distances, Cat 6 or 6a is the safer choice. There's no need to replace working Cat 5e for a 500 or 750 Mbps plan.

Your devices

Run the speed test on a few different devices. If your newer phone hits 600 Mbps and a five-year-old laptop manages 180, the laptop is the limit — not your connection. That's worth knowing before you spend money changing anything else.

Also worth checking: a device connected to the 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi band will be slow regardless of how good your plan or router is. Most modern routers steer devices to the faster 5 GHz or 6 GHz bands automatically, but older gear and some smart home devices sit stubbornly on 2.4 GHz. And as our Key Facts Sheet notes, Wi-Fi connected devices are generally slower than Ethernet connected ones — which is why the wired test in the section above matters.

On Family Max but only getting 200? Start here

Work through these in order — they're arranged roughly by how often they turn out to be the cause.

  1. You're testing over Wi-Fi. Test wired first to separate the connection from the home network. This alone explains most shortfalls.

  2. Your router's WAN port is the ceiling. A gigabit port can't pass more than about 940 Mbps, and cheaper routers sometimes cap lower.

  3. The testing device is old. Check a second device before concluding anything.

  4. You're on the 2.4 GHz band. Check which band you're connected to in your Wi-Fi settings.

  5. You're comparing against the wrong number. The speed tier is the maximum possible during off-peak. Compare against the typical evening speed in the table above.

  6. It's peak hour. Speeds between 7pm and 11pm are lower by design. Test at a quiet time as well as a busy one.

  7. Your access line doesn't support the tier. On FTTB, FTTN and FTTC connections we can't confirm your maximum line speed until the service is active. Once it is, we test it — and if your line doesn't support the tier you chose, we'll tell you, offer to move you to a lower one, and refund the difference.

  8. Something's wrong with the line or the connection box. If a wired test at an off-peak time is still well short, get in touch — that's not something you can fix from your end.

For businesses

Business connections were part of the uplift too, with 100/40 Mbps plans moving to 250/100 Mbps, and multi-gigabit Totalbiz options up to 2000/500 Mbps available for operations that need them. Upload speed is usually the bigger deal for a business — it's what determines how cloud backups, file transfers and video conferencing actually feel.

Worth noting: our residential nbn plans are intended for personal household use, so if you're running a business on one, a business plan is the better fit for both performance and support.

Frequently asked questions

If you were on an eligible FTTP or HFC plan of 100 Mbps or faster before 14 September 2025, yes — the uplift applied automatically at no extra cost, and your plan name should reflect the new tier. Check Superhub or your invoice to confirm. Customers on FTTN or FTTC connections weren't eligible, because those technologies are capped at 100 Mbps.

Usually because of Wi-Fi, an older device, or a router whose WAN port can't carry the plan. Run a wired speed test to separate your connection from your home network, then compare the result against your plan's typical evening speed rather than its headline speed tier. On Family Max nbn, for example, the typical evening speed is 500/40 Mbps.

For Lightspeed nbn (1000/100), a router with a 2.5 Gbps WAN port lets you reach the full speed — a gigabit port caps you at around 940 Mbps. For Hyperspeed nbn (2 Gbps), a 2.5 Gbps WAN port is essential, and you'll also need a new nbn connection box, because most existing boxes only support speeds up to 1 Gbps. nbn upgrades the box at no cost.

Yes. You can change your speed tier once per month at no cost, and the change takes effect immediately. Our plans have a one-month minimum term with no cancellation fee, though a 30-day notice period applies if you cancel. If you upgraded through Flip to Fibre, dropping below 100/40 Mbps within the first 12 months attracts a $200 fee.
