Fibre. It's all the rage in business internet circles, and there's good reason for that - it's simply the best access technology you can get for your business connection.

You might ask, why is fibre so special? I'm not sure if you're part of the generation who can remember dial-up connections but, our reliance on the internet has come a long way since then. In today's internet-critical business environment, business fibre offers a near seamless working experience (i.e., limited delays, limited dropouts and limited speed lags). It's the kind of internet connection that, when working perfectly, doesn't draw attention to itself. For many organisations, this underscores theimportance of direct fibrewhen uptime and low latency are essential.

The benefits of fibre are clear:

  • The fastest network capabilities

  • The most reliable connections

  • Less vulnerability to mishaps and weather events

A fibre connection could end up being the hardest working member of your team, and one that doesn't expect any fanfare and recognition (or Christmas bonuses either).

So, once you're ready to make the switch to all-fibre for your business, what type of fibre should you go with? While there are different plans with different inclusions, generally speaking, there are two types of business fibre internet services available in Australia: FTTP and Direct Fibre. Fibre to the Premises (FTTP)

Fibre to the Premises, or FTTP, delivers fibre cabling from the source all the way to your property or site.

FTTP differs from Fibre to the Node (FTTN) or Fibre to the Curb (FTTC) or even Fibre to the Building (FTTB) because these other connections use some combination of the new nbn fibre network with the old copper wiring system. Copper was originally intended for voice telecommunications -- not the data-heavy exchange of information that's typical of today's business activities. It therefore makes sense that the all-fibre FTTP network is far superior as an internet carrier.

The pros of FTTP

FTTP is widely available in most urban areas, which means, if you're a city business, there's a greater chance of you requesting a connection and getting it without any extra charge. If you connect to FTTP, then you can enjoy:

  • Affordable plans

  • High speeds

  • Easily sourced hardware (usually just a Wi-Fi router)

The cons of FTTP

Despite being full fibre, FTTP uploads are limited to 400Mbps, which means you don't get the super acceleration that's a standout feature of Direct Fibre products like nbn Enterprise Ethernet or Telstra Ethernet Access. But more on that in a moment.

The other mark against FTTP is its availability. There are around three million premises currently FTTP-ready across Australia, but this is a relatively small proportion of those seeking out FTTP. Those in FTTN and FTTC zones will get the option to upgrade to FTTP in the near future; however, if you're in a FTTB, HFC (Hybrid Fibre Coaxial) and Fixed Wireless zone, you're not going to be so lucky (unless you're slated for the Business Fibre Initiative).

When to consider connecting to FTTP

You've got a team of under 50 people and your business predominantly uses its internet connection for web browsing and emails, or for everyday collaboration tools such as Teams, Zoom and/or multi-line voice products.

Direct Fibre

Similar to Fibre to the Premises (FTTP), Direct Fibre (DF) products, such as nbn Enterprise Ethernet or Telstra Ethernet Access, use an all-fibre network for the ultimate business internet service. But – and here's the clincher – Direct Fibre runs through an entirely separate infrastructure to FTTP, one that is reserved solely for these products, which means it doesn't converge with other traffic at the usual network ports on its way to and from your business. You could consider direct fibre like having a dedicated phoneline, just for you, for making bookings at your favourite restaurant. The pros of DF

Businesses connected to DF have distinct performance advantages because of the promise of fast, symmetrical speeds. Compare a maximum upload speed of 400 Mbps on FTTP, and you don't have to be Einstein to work out that hitting up to 10Gbps on DF for uploads has mindblowing potential for your business.

It's also more likely that Direct Fibre will be available at your premises -- often at zero dollars upfront -- and that the network will be more reliable than FTTP due to having less shared components between the provider (i.e. Superloop) and the customer site. Telstra's Direct Fibre product, Ethernet Access, comes with 4G backup as an inclusion for added assurance, which is something you're not going to get with FTTP.

There are a number of other technical pluses from having symmetrical speeds too, such as being able to host your own servers and facilitate third-party management of those servers and so on. Trust me, it's all good stuff.

In a nutshell, the big advantages of Direct Fibre are:

  • Symmetrical downloads and uploads

  • Far lower latency or delays

  • Less susceptibility to faults

  • Guaranteed bandwidth at all times

  • Usually no extra installation charges (for 90% of business)

The cons of DF

To connect to this superior business fibre internet connection, there are a couple of hoops to jump through. Mainly:

  • A higher monthly fee

  • Commitment to a fixed contract

  • A more complex installation process

Given the complexity of Direct Fibre as a technology, you need a separate conduit for your connection, which requires a site inspection to accommodate the specifics of your premises. It may all seem like a bit of a hassle, but the rewards of DF generally outweigh any difficulties in getting things happening. In other words, don't let that put you off -- just go for it.

When to consider connecting to Direct Fibre

You've got a team of over 50 people and you use your internet connection for all the basics, plus cloud-based applications/platforms such as Salesforce, Oracle, Azure and AWS, or uploading large files to share with others. Even heavy-duty cloud-user teams of under 50 people will benefit significantly from the performance power of Direct Fibre.
