Identifying the bottleneck: Do I need to upgrade my plan or my device?

It's hard to match the euphoria of buying the best of something. It's basically like that fuzzy feeling you get before a holiday. It’s that “anything-is-possible energy.” If you buy a higher speed tier, you think being on the internet will match that vacay state of mind. It's relaxing.

But then you realise that there’s a huge rainstorm and all you’ve packed are board shorts. Sometimes the problem isn't what you bought. It's what you didn't check before you left.

But before you throw money at the problem (a natural response), it's worth asking some uncomfy questions. Maybe the bottleneck isn't your plan at all? What if it's the five-year-old laptop you stubbornly refuse to let go of or the modem that's been gathering dust behind the TV?

Slow internet is rarely just one thing's fault. Here's how to figure out if you need a new modem for faster internet or a new device.

It’s time to face the music. Most consumer modems and laptops start to really show their old age by year four. It is highly suggested that after five years, the hardware may fall behind with modern speeds, current Wi-Fi standards or the sheer volume of devices a typical household now runs.

Don’t feel like you’ve caved. If your modem or laptop is 5+ years old, there's a real chance your hardware is the problem, not your plan.

If your device supports Wi-Fi 5, it’s likely your neighbour's network, your microwave and your baby monitor are all on 2.4 GHz. Sorry to say that no plan upgrade in the world will fix that experience. The bottleneck is the Wi-Fi standard.
